If you’ve recently bought into a new skincare routine, its natural to search for signs of results from
the get-go, and it can be disappointing if they are not immediate. However, some skincare
products will take time to show results, so this not always going to be the case. A new skincare
routine needs time and consistency. Its a little like going to the gym – you need to be regular and
consistent, and then overtime, you will see results. And this “skin-gym”, as I like to call it, has
rules, and things that need to be borne in mind.
RULES YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SKINCARE
1. New skin cells take weeks to work their way up to the surface, so the effects of products on
your future skin is going to take some time to see.
2. The rate it takes to make new skin cells slows as we age. In young skin, this can take a month,
if you are in your fifties, for example, it can take 6 weeks or longer.
3 Different products work at different speeds – an exfoliating acid will gently resurface the skin
and cause an improved radiance within a few days, retinol can take up to 6 months before you
see any visible improvement.
4. Some products will have an instant effect. For example, a hydrating serum that is easily
absorbed will produce a plumping effect immediately.
5. Don’t keep changing your skincare products. If a product is promising to change the skin, it
needs time. Establish a skincare regimen and persevere with it.
6. Skin sometimes needs to acclimatise to new products, and the result of this can commonly
lead to “ skin purging” – meaning increased breakouts as the skin cells turn over quickly and bring
debris to the surface. It should eventually settle down, of course.
7. Less is more. – don’t go use more hoping to speed up the process. Use the products as
advised.
8. Get the best regimen for you by ensuring that you have spoke to a professional for the best
routine for your needs. This will ensure that they work together in the best way and also that you
are not spending your money on products that may not give the best results for your skin.
Remember – use your products consistently and as advised for at least 4 months before deciding
whether or not they are right for you.
