Sun DAMAGE

The sun produces UVB, UVA and IRA rays. All of these attack the skin.

UVB (B for Burning) penetrates the top 35% of the skin surface. It is dangerous and aggressive, causing skin cells to burn and die – a process we know as “sun burn”. UVB rays are high energy and serious. These rays not only age the skin, but cause skin cancer.

UVA (A for Ageing) penetrates deeper into the top 80% of the skin surface and are present all year round, passing though clouds and glass. They are slower to damage, and destroy collagen, a product that is essential for skin elasticity. UVA causes premature skin ageing with a loss in elasticity and an increase in wrinkles. It can take up to 15 years for the effects of this damage to show.

IRA (Infrared) penetrates all the way through the skin and into the base of the skin layer. We feel this as heat. It causes collagen to break down and also prevents it being made. This leads to the formation of wrinkles, a thinning of the skin, irritation and persistent skin redness.

Pollution DAMAGE

Chemicals from pollution penetrate the skin. In the top part of the skin, this causes a loss of vitamin E which is an important part of the skin barrier. Deeper into the skin, pollution causes the connective tissues to break down. This produces a premature ageing with a reduction in elasticity and an increase in wrinkles. Living in a highly polluted area has been shown to age people 10% faster than those who live in the country.

Sun DAMAGE and Pollution DAMAGE together

Scientifically, the damage that Sun and Pollution particles cause is called OXIDATIVE DAMAGE.

UV rays, IRA rays and Pollution break chemical bonds in skin cells by this oxidative damage and create highly reactive and aggressive molecules called FREE RADICALS that cause damage to protein, collagen and lipids in the skin and cause premature skin ageing.

The Remedy

PROTECT the SURFACE against sun and pollution damage with a SUNSCREEN.

However, research has shown that even the best broad spectrum sunscreen is NOT ENOUGH and can block only 55% of UV rays, 0% of IRA rays, and it has NOT BEEN PROVEN to defend against pollution damage.

In order to PREVENT remaining damage on the INSIDE of the skin, free radicals that are formed by sun and pollution particles that have penetrated through the sunblock need to be neutralized by ANTIOXIDANTS. They deactivate free radicals allowing the skin to strengthen and self repair.

There are 2 exceptions to the evening regime. Retinol 0.3 or Blemish and Age Defense Serum are used before Resveratrol BE.
